What is the Dickson Plan?

The Dickson Plan is a tried, tested and proven system of education involving 7 Controlled Post-Primary Schools in the Craigavon/Tandragee area.

  • Lurgan College (14-19 selective grammar school)
  • Portadown College (14-19 selective grammar school)
  • Craigavon Senior High School (14-16 non-selective school)
  • Clounagh Junior High School (11-14)
  • Killicomaine Junior High School (11-14)
  • Lurgan Junior High School (11-14)
  • Tandragee High School (11-14)

Pupils transfer from the Junior High Schools though a process of academic selection and election at age 14.

The Overwhelming Community Support

All three recent consultations by SELB, published in January 2013, June 2013 and February 2014, reveal unequivocal and unwavering support for the retention of the Dickson Plan, including 2 free-standing Selective Grammar Schools

Report on Feb 2014 SELB consultation:

  • 4,821 responses to SELB
  • 74.5% disagreed that the Dickson Plan should be updated (16.6% agreed)
  • 81.9% disagreed with the proposal to create a new enlarged LC (inc CSHS [Lurgan Campus], retaining ‘grammar’ school status (11.6 agreed)
  • 82.0% disagreed with the proposal to create a new enlarged PC (inc CSHS [Portadown Campus], retaining ‘grammar’ school status (11.9 agreed)
  • 85.9% disagreed with the proposal to merge CJHS, KJHS & TJHS into a single Portadown & Tandragee Junior College (6.4% agreed)
  • 89.4% agreed with the proposal for the status of LJHS to remain unchanged (2.6% disagreed)
  • 4 majority proposals (including retention of Dickson Plan, new builds for post 14 schools, single site 14-19 CSHS (51%)
  • 19 minority proposals (including co-location, merging PC & LC, separate solutions for Lurgan & Portadown, merging CSHS [Lurgan Campus] & LJHS to form 11-16 non-selective school with selected transfer at 14+ to LC) – each proposals 3% or less.
